Climate, Oases and Aflaj

In Arabia, water was the decisive element. Communities transformed arid environments into productive oases and, from the Iron Age, built the falaj irrigation systems — five of them inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in Oman.

Living in extreme environments

In the common imagination, the desert is often seen as an empty, hostile space that is difficult to inhabit. However, the history of Arabia shows a much more complex reality. The communities that lived in the Arabian Peninsula did not merely cross arid environments; they learned to know them, exploit their resources, and, in some cases, transform them into productive landscapes. In this history, water was the decisive element. Collecting, conserving, distributing, and protecting required technical knowledge, social organization, and a continuous capacity for adaptation.

Oases as Artificial Ecological Niches

Oases are not simple, natural “green islands” in the desert. They are constructed agricultural landscapes in which water, soil, plants, animals, and settlements are organized in a fragile yet productive balance. Their genesis was a gradual process. Some developed around springs, water tables, or seasonal watercourses, while others were literally created thanks to water collection and distribution systems.

From an ecological point of view, the oasis is an artificial microenvironment that modifies the conditions of the surrounding desert. Irrigation water allows for cultivation, and the vegetation produces shade and retains humidity, enabling the formation of productive agricultural spaces. The oasis thus functions as a stratified agricultural system, in which the date palm is the fundamental element. Its canopy reduces sun exposure, limits evaporation, and creates a shaded environment where other plants can grow.

In the shade of the palms, fruit trees are cultivated, and closer to the ground, cereals, legumes, and vegetables find their place. The palm is therefore important not only for dates—a nutritious, storable, and easily transportable food resource—but because it makes an entire agricultural landscape possible.

In various regions of Arabia, the date palm established itself at the beginning of the Bronze Age, as part of a broader process of circulation of trade goods and knowledge through maritime and land contacts with neighboring regions. It is in this context that the oasis began to take shape as a stable agrosystem, based on the association between irrigation, palms, and other crops.

Aflaj as Social Systems of Water Management

The oldest oases could develop around natural sources, springs, shallow water tables, or seasonal watercourses. During the Bronze Age, some agricultural areas were irrigated through channels, ditches, and diversions of seasonal waters. These works made it possible to exploit floods and available waters in semi-permanent watercourses, but they remained exposed to the variability of rainfall and global climatic conditions. Over time, water management techniques became more complex, leading to the introduction of falaj systems at the beginning of the Iron Age.

The falaj (plural aflaj) does not simply indicate a channel, but a hydraulic infrastructure organized to capture water from springs, water tables, or aquifers and conduct it by gravity toward settlements, palm groves, and cultivated fields. In many cases, the water travels along long underground or semi-underground stretches before emerging at distribution points, from which it is shared among users.

The aflaj established themselves along the foothills of the Al-Hajar Mountains—the “Rocky Mountains” of the Oman Peninsula—starting from the first millennium BCE, a period in which water management became increasingly decisive for sustaining agriculture under conditions of growing aridity. The water of the falaj is divided into shares and shifts, often calculated using traditional time-measurement systems and linked to forms of community management. In this sense, while a channel transports water, a falaj organizes a resource, a territory, and a community.

Today, aflaj still represent one of the most significant elements not only of the historical landscape but also of the contemporary one. In Oman, five aflaj are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as testimony to a much broader tradition, made up of thousands of systems still documented in the region. With the expansion of Islam, gravity-fed water catchment and distribution systems derived from the falaj also spread to North Africa and the Iberian Peninsula. The aflaj thus bear witness to the long duration of a technical knowledge capable of making a rare and fragile resource like water stable, shared, and regulated.
